Food for the Planet Festival 2024

We are looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join our team for this year’s Food for the Planet Festival which is taking place on Saturday 26th October at the Museum of Technology.

This year we are taking inspiration from the story of Jack, whose life got a whole lot better when he found some magic beans, and celebrating the amazing power of beans to benefit both people and planet. For one magical day the Museum of Technology will transform into a ’Beantopia’ bursting with bean-based cookery demos, talks, stalls, and activities to get people excited about bean-ing more like Jack.

There are lots of opportunities to get involved in one of the most exciting events in the CSF calendar and we would love you to join us in making this year’s festival the biggest and best one yet.

We are seeking volunteers in the run-up to the festival (30th Sept onwards) to support with:

  • Making decorations

  • Distributing leaflets and promotion

We also need a team of volunteers on the day (26th Oct) to:

  • Run stalls

  • Welcome visitors

  • Support with activities throughout the day

  • Set up and pack down equipment

If you’d like to get involved with any of these opportunities please get in touch with alex@cambridgesustainablefood.org.

Run the Cambridge Half Marathon with Cambridge Sustainable Food

Run the Cambridge Half Marathon with Cambridge Sustainable Food

At Cambridge Sustainable Food (CSF) we still have two fundraising places available for the Cambridge Half Marathon and we are inviting you to get involved!

Why do we need your support?

Food causes a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and millions of people in the UK can’t afford to put food on the table. Whilst these are big challenges that need global solutions, we can all make positive change happen and play a part locally.

By fundraising for CSF we can continue to tackle the issue of Cambridge Food Poverty and provide healthy, sustainable food that everyone in Cambridge can access with dignity.

How to get involved?

To secure your spot in the TTP Cambridge Half Marathon through CSF:

Non-refundable Entry Fee: £25

Minimum Fundraising Target: £300

Deadline for registration: 25th January 2024

By becoming a CSF fundraising athlete you can also become part of our CSF community of runners which could offer you support through your training.

What’s next?

Interested in securing your spot or already have a place and want to fundraise for CSF? Let us know by emailing volunteer@cambridgesustainablefood.org by 25th Jan!

Volunteer this Christmas 2023 for households in need

Volunteer this Christmas 2023 for households in need

  • Google Calendar ICS

This festive season, as well as sending out food to the seven food hubs around the city - who give this food out to people in need - we are working with Cambridge City Foodbank and Cambridge City Council as part of the Christmas Hamper Project. The Food Bank have a target of 800 hampers which will contain a range of traditional goods like puddings, biscuits and treats, which most of us take for granted. Meanwhile the City Council will arrange for toys to be distributed to families with children.

Sam Dyer, CEO of Cambridge Sustainable Food

“The response to the Christmas project previously has been fantastic and we hope that this year will be no different. Initiatives like this are central to achieving food justice for all and we hope that it will make the holiday season a little brighter for many families in our city.”

How are Cambridge Sustainable Food involved?

For the 4th year running, Cambridge Sustainable Food will source and distribute fresh vegetables to households in need shortly before Christmas. Last year we supported over 650 families and hope to do the same.

How to support our work?

1) Donate to our Cambridge Winter Cost of Living Crisis Campaign

This winter many people in Cambridge will struggle with competing demands for rent, energy and other bills. We are working hard to ensure that those that cannot afford food in our city don’t go hungry this winter. Donations will support this work as well as providing a Christmas veg bag this season.
Here’s what your donation could fund:

  • £15 could fund vegetables for a family over the Christmas period

  • £150 could keep one of the food hubs we support stocked for a week

  • £760 could keep all of the food hubs we support stocked for a week

2) Volunteer this December with Cambridge Sustainable Food

From sorting supermarket surplus or packing Christmas veg to volunteer driving delivering hampers, toys and food to people in need. You can make a difference with your time this festive season. Volunteering opportunities for our Christmas Project are available from Wednesday 13th until Thursday 21st. We do not have any opportunities from December 25th until December 31st.

Rebuilding Daily Bread's raised beds

Some years ago, the Transition Cambridge Growing Spaces project teamed up with Daily Bread to create some raised beds outside the cooperative - you can see pictures and read about it here The beds are now badly in need of repair, so they’re planning some work days to take down the old beds and build new ones. If you'd like to help with this, please register here, letting them know which dates you can do - they'll be in touch to confirm dates/times and with some suggestions about what to bring. They will stick to whatever the current covid-19 restrictions are at the time (currently no more than 6 people), and it will also be weather dependent. All help appreciated! If you'd like to be part of the team that will plant up the beds and look after them into the future, please be in touch with Meg.
